**Job Purpose:**To develop, test, and improve paint and aerosol formulations to meet customer and market requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, test, and optimize new aerosol and paint formulations (base paint, pigments, resins, additives, propellants).
- Conduct color development, shade matching, tinting, and improve product durability and performance.
- Perform laboratory trials, spray evaluations, and stability testing under different conditions.
- Collaborate with production to scale up lab formulations into full factory batches and resolve technical issues.
- Research and evaluate new raw materials, technologies, and suppliers for cost or performance improvement.
- Establish technical specifications and standards for all new products.
- Prepare TDS, SDS, formulation sheets, and maintain complete documentation of all experiments and trials.
- Prepare and update Bill of Materials (BOM) including raw material codes, usage percentages, and loss factors.
- Inspect and test incoming raw materials according to specifications.
- Conduct in-process and finished goods testing including: viscosity, color, gloss, adhesion, drying time, hardness, stability, spray performance, leakage, pressure, and weight checks.
- Perform color matching using a spectrophotometer and adjust formula as needed.
- Ensure all finished products meet controlled standards before release to market.
- Investigate internal quality issues and assist with RCA / 8D problem-solving.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments and testing equipment.
- Issue and follow up CPARs for non-conforming raw materials or finished goods.
- Maintain QC records, inspection reports, COAs, and retain samples.
- Maintain laboratory records, SOPs, and test methods in compliance with ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 requirements.
- Support internal and external audits and ensure proper documentation control.
- Follow chemical handling, environmental, and safety guidelines (GHS, VOC, DG requirements).
- Ensure proper storage and disposal of lab chemicals and samples.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Candidate must possess Degree in Chemistry / Applied Chemistry / Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
2. Experience in paint industry or relevant chemical industry is an advantage.
3. Experience and knowledge in QMS ISO9001 and ISO14001 and statistical skills will be added advantage.
4. No Color Blindness.
5. Knowledge of Coating Raw Materials & Chemistry - Familiar with resins, pigments, solvents, additives, and coating properties.
6. Experience in Laboratory Testing & Instruments - Knowledge of viscosity testing, gloss meter, color spectrophotometer, adhesion test, hardness test, stability tests is compulsory.
7. Understanding of Aerosol Systems - Understands propellant systems, valves, cans, spray patterns, pressure testing, etc.
8. Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting Skills - Strong troubleshooting ability for batch inconsistency, shade variation, settling, viscosity drift, and spray ability issues.
